JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ WJTV-TV in Jackson and WXVT-TV in Greenville received the 2007 Best Newscasts awards Saturday night at the 23rd annual Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters Association's awards ceremony.

WMSI-WQJQ in Jackson was the recipient of Best Newscast in the radio division.
The awards, based on selections made by judges from participating out-of-state AP member broadcast outlets, were presented in Jackson. WJTV received its Best Newscast award for large market stations and WXVT won the small market category.

WLOX-TV sports director and investigative reporter A.J. Giardina received the Howard Lett Newsperson of the Year Award, named for the late longtime Jackson broadcaster.
The MAPBA also announced the induction of two people into its Hall of Fame. WAPT-TV photographer James Foster and WLOX-TV chief photographer Bobby Allen were inducted at the banquet.

The top college award went to Jackson State University students LaQuanesha Fields and Elvis Hardwick in the Best Feature category which was broadcast on JSU-TV 22. They also received the first-ever MAPBA scholarship award.

WLOX-TV in Biloxi won the most first-place awards _ nine _ while WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg had six first-place awards. WLOX earned top honors for its investigative reporting, public affairs reporting, weathercast and spot news story. Among WLOX's other top honors were franchise reporting, documentary, sports story and news photography.

WLOX and WTOK-TV in Meridian earned first place in Achievement, which reflects the best of what a station does on a daily basis. WMSI/WQJQ in Jackson earned first place in Achievement in the radio division.

WLIN-FM won top radio Web site honors for its www.breezynews.com. First place TV Web site honors went to Columbus station WCBI for www.wcbi.com and to Jackson station WAPT for http://www.wapt.com/.

Sports director/anchor Rob Jay, assistant sports director/weekend anchor Chuck Stinson and anchor/reporter/sports photojournalist Scott Vlahon, all of WLBT, received the "Best Sportscast" award in Division I. It was the third consecutive year for Jay to win the award, while WDAM's sports director Mitchell Williams was also a repeat winner with the "Best Sportscast" award in Division II for the third consecutive year.

Top weathercast awards went to chief meteorologist Mike Reader of WLOX and to evening forecaster Nick Ortego of WDAM.

All radio stations are judged in a single division. Television stations are divided into two categories: stations in Jackson and Biloxi compete in Division I, while Division II includes stations in Columbus, Tupelo, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Greenville and Greenwood.
