The 2008 Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters Association's annual convention will be held April 11, 2009, in downtown Jackson on the 19th floor of the Capitol Towers building.
Awards will go to the winners of the MAPBA contest for outstanding broadcast journalism in 2008.

The following information is for stations planning to enter the contest:
Awards are presented in the form of first-place plaques and first, second- and third-place certificates.
Deadline for entries is January 31, 2009, at 5 p.m. Contest entries will NOT be accepted after that time. The 2008 designated contest days were Feb. 21, March 12, Aug. 5, and Nov. 20.
MAPBA 2008 CONTEST RULES
The following rules apply:
1. All entries must be delivered to The Associated Press office in Jackson either by mail, delivery service, by hand or other means no later than 5 p.m., January 31, 2009. Entries will not be accepted after that time.
2. ENTRY FEES: Each television station pays a ten dollar fee for each entry with a maximum of 250 dollars from one station with 20 or more entries.
Each radio station pays a five dollar fee for each entry with a maximum of 50 dollars for 10 or more entries.
A station's fee MUST accompany its entries or the station must send a letter stating its intention to pay the fee by January 31, 2009. Entries NOT accompanied by the proper fee or the letter will NOT be accepted.
3. Contest entries must come from material aired during the period from Jan. 1, 2008, to Dec. 31, 2008. Entries for newscast, sportscast and weathercast must come from designated contest days, as outlined above __ Feb. 21, March 12, Aug. 5, and Nov. 20.
4. FORMAT RULES. It is mandatory that all entries be as follows: CD (Radio) and DVD (TV), otherwise such entries will be disqualified. Each RADIO entry must be clearly labeled with the station's call letters, the division in which it is competing, the category, the entry title (if any), the air date and the staff member involved. The information also should be provided on the attached entry form. Entries not meeting these requirements will be disqualified.
5. Each TV entry must be clearly labeled with the station's call letters, the division in which it is competing, the category, the entry title (if any), the air date and the staff member(s) involved. 6. Supporting materials, such as printed scripts and texts, may be attached for consideration by the judges, but only the CD/DVD itself will be considered the entry.
7. The overall winner in the spot news for television from each division and from radio automatically qualify for entry in the national Associated Press Broadcasters awards contest. One overall winner in the documentary-news series and feature categories among radio entries and from investigative reporting, feature and documentary-news series from all television entries will be entered into the national AP contest under the category of enterprise. No additional entry fee is required.
8. Judging is by out-of-state members of Associated Press broadcasters' associations. The state judging the contest remains confidential until after the awards are decided. The decisions of the judges are final.
9. The Howard Lett Newsperson of the Year Award will be judged by the MAPBA board. This award will be given to either a radio or television newsperson. A station may nominate one person and submit written material of only a half-page or less about the candidate. Nominations can be submitted with contest entries or separately by Feb. 16.
10. The MAPBA Hall of Fame. Nominations will be judged by the MAPBA board. Reporters, producers, anchors, news directors, photographers, and other news staff who have worked in the state at least five years will be eligible for induction. Nominees must have a distinguishable broadcasting career in Mississippi and can be inducted posthumously. Two people maximum will be inducted. Nominations can be submitted with contest entries or separately by Feb. 16.
