2005 Awards Story










JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ WLOX-TV in Biloxi and WXVT-TV in Greenville received the 2005 Best Newscasts awards Saturday night at the 21th annual Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters Association's awards ceremony. Mississippi Public Broadcasting was the recipient of Best Newscast in the state's radio division.

The awards, based on selections made by judges from participating out-of-state AP member broadcast outlets, were presented in Jackson.

WLBT-TV won eight first-place awards _ the most for any television station. The Jackson television station earned top honors for its sportscast, investigative reporting, weathercast and in spot news and feature photography.

WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg won five first-place awards. WLOX received its Best Newscast award for large market stations and WXVT won the small market category.
_
WLOX also won the "James S. Saggus Memorial Award," given annually to a station for its efforts to share news with The Associated Press. The award is named for Saggus, a longtime AP newsman, who retired in 1988 and died in 1995.

WJTV reporter Melanie Christopher received the Howard Lett Newsperson of the Year Award, named for the longtime Jackson broadcaster.

The MAPBA also announced the induction of five people into its Hall of Fame. WLOX's station manager and news director David Vincent was inducted, along with WTOK news director John Johnson, WLBT's Walt Grayson, former WLBT sports director Michael Rubenstein, who is now executive director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Museum, and Howard Lett.

WAPT in Jackson and WDAM earned first place in Achievement, which reflects the best of what a station does on a daily basis. Mississippi Public Broadcasting earned first place in Achievement in the radio division.

Television stations are divided into two categories: stations in Jackson and Biloxi compete in Division I, while Division II includes stations in Columbus, Tupelo, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Greenville and Greenwood. All radio stations are judged in a single division.

Sports anchor and director Rob Jay of WLBT received the "Best Sportscast" award in Division I, while WDAM's Mitchell Williams won the "Best Sportscast" award in Division II for the second consecutive year.

Top weathercast awards went to Barbie Bassett of WLBT _ her second straight award _ and Rick Wirdzek of WCBI in Columbus.
