JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ WLOX-TV in Biloxi and WTVA-TV in Tupelo received the 2006 Best Newscasts awards Saturday night at the 22nd annual Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters Association's awards ceremony.

Mississippi Public Broadcasting was the recipient of Best Newscast in the radio division.
The awards, based on selections made by judges from participating out-of-state AP member broadcast outlets, were presented in Jackson.

WLBT-TV and WLOX-TV each won five first-place awards. WLBT earned top honors for its investigative reporting, sports story, franchise reporting, sportscast and weathercast.

WLOX received its Best Newscast award for large market stations and WTVA won the small market category. Among WLOX's other top honors were feature photography, general news story, news photography and public affairs reporting.

WTOK-TV in Meridian won four first-place awards.

WLBT anchor/reporter Bert Case received the Howard Lett Newsperson of the Year Award, named for the late longtime Jackson broadcaster.

The MAPBA also announced the induction of four people into its Hall of Fame. WDAM news director Randy Swan; one of the founders of the MAPBA, former WAPT news director Steve Gill, who is deceased; WLBT's Howard Ballou and Marsha Thompson were inducted at Saturday's banquet. Ballou is an anchor/reporter and Thompson is a reporter at the Jackson station.

WAPT in Jackson and WTOK earned first place in Achievement, which reflects the best of what a station does on a daily basis. WMSI/WQJQ in Jackson earned first place in Achievement in the radio division.

Television stations are divided into two categories: stations in Jackson and Biloxi compete in Division I, while Division II includes stations in Columbus, Tupelo, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Greenville and Greenwood. All radio stations are judged in a single division.

Sports anchor and director Rob Jay of WLBT received the "Best Sportscast" award in Division I for the second consecutive year, while WDAM's Mitchell Williams also repeated a win with the "Best Sportscast" award in Division II for the third consecutive year.

Top weathercast awards went to Barbie Bassett of WLBT _ her third straight award _ and Dick Rice of WTVA in Tupelo.
